So how do you know if you have termites in your house? Some people are not quite sure what white ants or termites actually look like. So here are some examples based on actual images taken from  homes around the Scenic Rim, Gold Coast and Logan areas with termites.

Termite Mud Trails

Termites move inside mud trails. This allows them to maintain their desired atmosphere and protects them from predators. Mud trails are not always immediately evident on the inside of your house. Termites will feed on the timber in the walls and often the only time they are noticed is when the architraves or skirting boards have been eaten, leaving only a thin layer of timber. Even then sometimes this damage goes undetected until a termite inspection reveals the hidden attack.

Mud trails can be seen often in the environment, climbing up a tree or timber post in the ground. Sometimes but not always when a termite nest attacks a house they can be seen scaling the brick work to enter a weep hole or crack in the mortar. If your building has a physical barrier and termites try to attack your house, they will be forced to reveal their trails on the outer wall because they can not penetrate the physical barrier.  More often than not when termites enter a house it will not be obvious where they have entered, that is why you should employ a professional to inspect your house.

The image below shows a mud trail heading up to a piece of timber. This was photo was taken under a house in a subfloor with 30cm clearance. Without a termite inspection from Scenic Rim Pest Management these termites would have gone undetected.

Termite Soldiers and workers

Termite Colonies have different termites for different jobs. The main termites you see are the workers and the soldiers. There are many different species of termites and all have slightly different appearances and can do different amounts of damage to your home. Some termites are known as being very aggressive and can eat your house very quickly. Other types are less aggressive and move slowly. If you find termites in your gardens or under landscaping timbers, this is an indication there is a termite nest near by. A Termite inspection by a professional is recommended.

Here is an example of some termites. The one with the orange head is a  soldier which protect the colony. The other type that you see are the workers. The workers do the damage.
